The first grade brings together two groups of children from separate Kindergarten classes and makes them one unit. This little learning community bubbles with enthusiasm, finds each new piece of information fascinating, and revels in every success.
Learning about God's love for us is woven into the entire fabric of the grade one curriculum. The curriculum provides working in groups and working independently. Students are expected to be responsible for their behavior and their supplies. Homework is assigned Monday through Thursday to begin the good habit of study at home. In every subject area, teaching involves all the senses. Students work with manipulative pieces to aid in grasping mathematics concepts. Science and social studies lessons find them touching, tasting, looking, smelling and listening intently.
Learning centers established around the room enrich the basic lessons taught to the larger group. Students are encouraged to be confident both to ask for help and to give help to others when needed.
